Municipality of San Francisco



The Municipality of San Francisco is the biggest town in Camotes in terms of income, land area and population. The town used to be called Suangan because of the abundance of Sawong trees. The town’s name was later changed to San Francisco to honor one of the early settlers whose name was Francisco. One of the main attractions in San Francisco is Lake Danao, which is shaped like the figure 8 and is the largest lake in the Visayas. The lake has won awards as the cleanest inland body of water in the region.

San Francisco is a third income class municipality in the province of Cebu Province, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 47,357.
Almost all of San Francisco is located on Pacijan Island. A part of brgy Esperanza also includes Tulang Island a short distance north of Pacijan. Both the islands of Pacijan and Tulang are part of the Camotes Islands group.

San Francisco is 38 nautical miles of Cebu city in Central Philippines. It is a small piece
of paradise. A general small island in northeast of mainland, Cebu. This third class municipality
sprawls 12414’04’’ to 124 30'37 and 10 32'48 latitude . The municipality is bounded on the
north, south, and west by the shark infested Camotes Sea and on the east by Ponson Island
(municipality of Poro). 


San Francisco comprises 15 barangays:

Cabunga-an, Campo, Consuelo, Esperanza, Himensulan, Montealegre, Northern Poblacion, San Isidro, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Sonog, Southern Poblacion, Unidos, Union, Western Poblacion



CLIMATE
Humid tropical climate with the rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout the year (Type IV).


FLORA
Corn and coconuts are cultivated in the surrounding areas of the lake. Several rare orchids and a variety of herbs of medicinal value also grow along the shore of the lake.
Most of the original vegetation has disappeared, and even the small islet in the lake has been planted with coconuts. The only remaining area of aquatic vegetation is on the east side of the lake, where the water is shallow and there is a dense growth of submerged vegetation.
Soli-Soli is a type of grass that grow abundantly along the banks of the lake and one of the source of livelihood on the island. These grasses are harvested, dried and woven into different kinds of handicrafts such as bags, mats, hats and other decorative materials and then sold to the local and mainland market outlets. FAUNA
The lake supports a very rich fishery, and most of the local residents are dependent on this resource for their subsistence.
The rich fish fauna includes Tilapia, Common Carp , Milkfish, Gobies (Glossogobius giuris) and Catfishes. A wide variety of waterfowl occur including Little Grebes (Tachybaptus ruficollis), Intermediate Egrets, (Egretta intermedia), Purple Herons and Wandering Whistling Duck. The Estuarine Crocodile formerly inhabits the lake. From the Groombridge report (1982), the population was still healthy in 1978, but according to other reports, the last individual was killed in 1971. Monitor lizards can still be seen occasionally on its shore.


ATTRACTION


LAKE DANAO PARK
Located in Sitio Patabog, in Brgy. Union, the municipal lake park is the place to go for fishing and boating, with spacious area for picnicking. Boats are available for rental in the park or launched from the wharf of the park.


SOLI-SOLI FESTIVAL
Soli-Soli Festival is an annual festival celebrated in Lake Danao Park every 3rd Sunday of March, coinciding with the town fiesta honoring Saint Joseph, the town's patron saint. Extending throughout the island, the much-anticipated event is an occupational festival injected with religious sentiments of thanksgiving and devotion shown through flamboyant colors, abundant food and fervent choreographed dancing.


ISLET
The small island of Pacijan has two interior islands of its own - Snake and Crocodile. The islets can be reached by boats or as part of the scenic lake cruise from Lake Danao Park.

Lake Danao is a freshwater lake located in the northern part of Pacijan Island (also known as Pacijan Island), one of the Camotes Islands in the province of Cebu, Philippines. With an area of 680 ha. (1,680 ac.), the figure-eight-shaped body of water, is the not only the largest lake in the province but also in the Visayan Region of the country.
The lake is surrounded by six barangays and the poblacion of San Francisco, Cebu.
